Stage 4 - Water in the World Incursion

Geography

Program Overview

This incursion is a ‘sample’ of the water in the world excursion run on site at Penrith Lakes and is designed for Stage 4 students but may be used across other stages.

Students investigate the value of water, local water resources, and evaluate water management

strategies in the Penrith Lakes area catchment, associated with the development of the Penrith Lakes Scheme.

Students work in small groups to perform abiotic water quality testing on water collected from ‘Waterside’, a housing development site based on ‘Water Sensitive Urban Design’ principles and a sample of water collected from the Sydney International Regatta Centre. They compare and rate the quality of the two water samples to assess the efficacy of water management.
They look at aquatic macroinvertebrates caught at Penrith Lakes and how they can help assess water quality, using sensitivity ratings.
